President’s Message

September 2024

Our club's bonsai show this year is just a few weeks away, and October is quickly approaching. This means we need to prepare our trees for their final touch-up and ensure we have signed up for their final display positioning. If you need help in any way, please reach out to a senior member of our club for assistance.

Our third Thursday meeting this month will be dedicated to club members volunteering for various necessary jobs to be done on the Friday evening before our show. This will involve setting up and skirting the main display tables. This preparation will allow us to drop in the following morning with only our trees to place into position. On that Friday evening, we're asking everyone to be there and ready to help out by 7:00 PM. The following morning of our show, we cannot enter the building any sooner than 8:00 AM. That’s when we're asking everyone to have their trees ready to be brought in for final positioning. For the first 40 minutes, we will have tables set up in the lobby where you can drop off your trees while waiting to be placed in the show area. If you have questions regarding placement, please ask either myself or JT!

For Our First Thursday Meeting

For those of you who have never prepared a tree for presentation, Juan Cruz will be handling our first Thursday meeting program. He will cover various techniques and concepts of Japanese display styles, as well as how we prepare our pots and trees for the best presentation. Juan will discuss all aspects of what is expected of us to put a tree in the show, so make sure to be there that evening and take notes if necessary.

In addition, Juan requests that many of you please bring your trees, display tables, and accent plants so he has a good selection of materials to work with for his presentation.

For our Thursday meeting, this will be everyone's opportunity to bring in trees for further show preparation and volunteer for the various jobs needed for our show.

Yes, It's Show Time Next Month!

Our show this year is on Saturday, October 19th. The show will open at 10:00 AM and conclude at 5:00 PM for attendees. Following the show's closing, we will need your assistance to take down the display backdrops and be ready to leave the center by 6:00 PM. Please ensure you relocate any trees or materials you brought for the show and move them out of the working area as quickly as possible. The truck that delivered our display materials will need to be reloaded and sent back to the storage area. It will take everyone's support to pull off this exit on time!

Here's the address of our show:
Quinlan Community Center
10185 N. Stelling Rd.
Cupertino, CA 95014

Advertise, Advertise, Advertise Our Show!

Please, everyone, we need your help to promote our show by utilizing our printed flyers and advertising materials. Make sure to take flyers home at the next meeting and offer them to anyone you know who might be interested in attending. It's always nice to see a well-attended bonsai show with people who appreciate the hard work we put into our trees and their presentation.

Show Awards

The club will also be awarding four different awards for this year's best trees in four categories. Each club member will be asked to judge the best trees in each category by receiving a judging sheet first thing that morning. Once all trees are in position, use your judging sheet to make your selections, and then turn them in at the front desk for final totals. The four winners will receive a glass trophy entitled "Members' Choice Award" at our 1:00 PM demonstration ceremony. Now, there’s a great incentive for everyone!

Have a great time finalizing your trees for the show, everyone! 🌳
