Tree Sales and Some Inspiration

Hi everyone, hope everyone is slowly able to enjoy the nice weather and being able to return to doing normal things again. It’s nice to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel now with some awesome news out there. In this month’s newsletter, there are two topics I’d like to share.

First, we have some tree sales to announce. The first one is from a long-time fellow Midori Club member, Roger Geerts, who would love to see his trees go to a good home. I know Roger and his trees are some of the best I've seen. The second is at Lotus Bonsai Nursery up in Placerville. I have met Bolet of Lotus Bonsai at various Bonsai events and they also have wonderful trees and soil. I bought a 5 gallon bucket of it from them last time I was at the Bonsai Convention a few years ago. Lastly, we have the Sei Boku Bonsai Kai sale in June. I’m sure there will be some fantastic trees for sale here — it’s being held at none other than Gordon Deeg’s. Hope everyone can use these opportunities to expand their collection of bonsai trees!

The second section will be something I would like to do as a recurring section over the next few months. I would like to share some photographs of trees that I see on my hikes that I use as inspiration for my own trees. I would also like to share some guest images. If you have seen a tree that inspires you, take a picture of it, write a little bit about what makes it special to you, and I’ll feature it in the next newsletter. I hope you all enjoy this feature!

Tree Sales

A Note from Roger Geerts

Roger Geerts, a club member for years, needs a new home for his bonsai trees. Rogers’s health is now making it impossible to care for his collection so he is willing to pass along most of his trees for free to good home. Please give him a call at 408-720-8181 to set up an appointment to stop by and make your choices. Most trees are free, some a modest charge!

Lotus Bonsai Nursery Sale

Dear Friends in Bonsai,

We are happy to announce that the Annual Spring Sale at Lotus Bonsai Nursery will be happening next month after 2020’s break due to COVID.

The revised schedule is now Saturday and Sunday only, May 15-16, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Plants, pots, and stones will be at 20% off. Soil, pumice, and bonsai tools and other supplies are at regular pricing. 5-gallon buckets of soil and all bags of pumice (akadama, kanuma, hyuga) are $35 each. We understand there’s a shortage of pumice in California so stock up now.

We recommend the following methods of payment: cash, check or Venmo. Credit cards will be accepted but will be charged 3% processing fees.

Scott and Bolet have already received two Pfizer shots in March. We hope you all have been vaccinated.

Lotus Bonsai Nursery is a low-risk environment. However, everyone is required to wear masks and requested to practice social distancing while at the nursery.

We look forward to seeing you again.

Trees in the Wild

I recently did a mini gallery for Escaype, the weather forecasting service and community for photographers that I co-founded, titled Wild Niwaki. It is a series of images that I have captured from around the world featuring amazing trees in the wild. I am always amazed at what nature (and sometimes in conjunction with a little human effort) can do to trees.

To start us off, I would like to share this image of trees in San Francisco framing the Golden Gate Bridge titled Trees and Bridge. This image was taken a few years ago at sunset. This two-tree group planting of Monterey Cypress shows a beautiful flat top style. While the first branch is low on the dominant right tree, the pads are placed high. The suggestion of a constant breeze is provided by the strong directionality of the branches to the right. Both trees have a nice taper from the (hidden) nebari to the crown.

These Cypresses are seen all over the California coast. Take a hike along a trail and you’ll see some very impressive flat top styles, twisted trunks, and sometimes a bunjin/literati styles, all shaped by the wind and sea spray.
